News Mahila Premier League Kicks Off

The second season of Mahila Premier League (MPL II) started from 15 th of September, at Grassroots Recreational Center in Mandikatar.

MPL is Nepal's first women's futsal league; funded by the European Union in Nepal, organized by The WE United Project, and supported by many local businesses. The League is a fully women-run initiative: played, organized and refereed by women. Eight teams will compete for the title of Kathmandu's best women's futsal team in order to promote a culture of competition, camaraderie, and collaboration in Nepali women's futsal for upcoming eight weeks. League games will be played on Saturdays until November 3 rd .

The Opening Ceremony of the MPL by Mr. Ambar Mainali from the European Union in Nepal who complimented the high-level of skill displayed during last year’s season giving away an encouraging speech. 80 women from eight different teams are competing in the League; on Saturday, to kick off the League, each team played two matches. Players as well as spectators were enthusiastic, and constant support from over 100 fans elevated the ambience. Fans were
impressed by the intensity of the games, including the fancy footwork, dynamic passing techniques, and inspiring sportswoman ship on display.

At the end of the week one, Futsal Arena along with Pasang College top the table with 6 points each, followed by Barca Nepal, Kumari Futsal and The Mighty Mahilas with 4 points each. FC S YES and MUFC Nepal Girls finished in the bottom half with 3 points each after a nail biting game that ended in a 3-3 draw. NMB Bank, three time champions of the Inter-bank Futsal Tournament, finished with 2 points.

A total of 76 goals were scored by all teams, giving fans and players plenty to celebrate. “We worked really hard for this year’s MPL, and when we did win our first game today we got more than encouraged to work harder. We are quite determined to win this year”, says Jharana Rai, goalkeeper for Pasang College.

Kathmandu’s women futsal scene has many inspiring players and young talents, and MPL is initiated to provide space to these women players to interact with one another, develop skills on and off the field, and build a supportive network for women’s involvement in sport. To multiply the encouragement and excitement The We United Project has collaborated with sponsors: Gymkhana Muay Thai, Samsara Design, Gorkha Aesthetics, Hotel Shambala, Fitstop Fitness,
Riverside Spring Resort, and more.

The top three teams at the end of the League will be awarded experiential team prizes such as exclusive gym memberships, hotel passes, a relaxing overnight stay in a resort, and other thrilling gift hampers. Next Saturday, September 22 nd, all eight teams will have games between 10:30 – 12:30 at Grassroots Recreational Center.
