News A Turbulent Week in Nepali Football – Now Is the Time for Calm, Not Chaos - GoalNepal Comment
GoalNepal

This past week has been nothing short of chaotic for Nepali football. The women national team’s failure to qualify for the final round of the AFC Asian Cup has triggered a storm of controversies, revealing deep cracks within the camp that had remained hidden until the losses piled up.

If Nepal had secured qualification, much of what we’re seeing now might have stayed under wraps. But as is often the case in football, defeat lays everything bare. The post-match fallout has led to serious allegations—ranging from the controversial decision to appoint Sabitra Bhandari as captain, to the head coach Pattrick Wilde's failure to return to Nepal after the qualifiers. Most notably, public accusations from the coaching staffs and former captain Anjila Tumbapo Subba against Wilde for alleged mistreatment have rocked the football community.

Let’s Not Turn This Into a Media Trial

At a time when emotions are running high, it’s crucial that we, as media, don’t escalate the situation unnecessarily. This is not the moment for a media trial. Instead, a more responsible role for the press would be to provide constructive criticism, facilitate clarity, and encourage a path forward.

The recent press conference held by the coaching staff was poorly timed. While their grievances may be valid, taking internal issues to the public domain without due process only weakens the team’s image and disrupts its focus. Ultimately, it's not the coach or the staff who suffer the most—it’s Nepali football and, more importantly, the players who carry the dreams of millions.

Coaches Come and Go, But the Game Remains

Pattrick Wilde may or may not continue as Nepal’s coach, but the larger issue is the impact these off-field dramas have on the long-term development of our football. Changes in coaching staff are inevitable in football, but what must remain consistent is the system, the planning, and the focus on development. Right now, we are missing that stability.

A Call for Calm and a Clear Roadmap

All parties involved—be it ANFA, players, coaches, or the media—must remain calm. It’s essential to settle the dust first and then dissect the situation with a clear head and a positive approach. With the SAFF Championship looming, now is the time to regroup and realign.

Nepal has a troubling history in the SAFF Championship—falling short in the final not just once or twice, but over 13 times. This trend must be reversed. It requires focus, discipline, unity, and above all, a well-crafted roadmap from ANFA.

The Way Forward

ANFA needs to step up. Silence breeds speculation. The fans deserve to know that their governing body is serious, responsible, and committed to resolving the current issues with maturity. The next steps should be transparent: a fair internal review, proper communication with stakeholders, and a clear direction for the national team.

Nepali football has always shown promise. The talent is there. What it needs now is peace, patience, and a plan.
