News Asia's Best Set For November Friendlies In Europe

Korea Republic and Japan are set to play Mexico in international friendly matches on November 15 and 17 respectively.

The Korea Football Association, in announcing the match-up, said the tie would be played in Austria. The host city and stadium will be finalised in the coming days. Qatar, meanwhile, said they will play Korea Republic two days later, also in Austria.

Japan's match against Mexico will also be played in Austria.

With international football slowly returning after being grounded to a halt by the COVID-19 pandemic, the friendlies against Mexico and Qatar will give head coach Paulo Bento a chance to gauge the form of Korea Republic’s Europe-based players.

Bento selected an entirely home-based squad for two friendlies against the Korea Republic U23 squad during this past week’s international break.

The likes of Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min may be called up with most of Korea Republic’s Europe-based stars not having played for the national side since last November’s Asian Qualifiers.

The friendly match against Mexico will be the 13th meeting between the two sides, with Korea Republic having won four and the Central Americans seven.

Their most recent meeting was at the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018, with Mexico winning the Group F encounter 2-1.
