Nepal's dream of winning the SAFF Women's Championship on home soil was dashed once more as they fell to Bangladesh 2-1 in the final held at Dasharath Stadium on Wednesday.
Bangladesh secured their second consecutive title, with Monica Chakma scoring in the 52nd minute and Ritu Porna Chakma adding another in the 81st. Amisha Karki netted a goal for Nepal in the 56th minute.
The match began with a goalless first half, where both teams had opportunities but struggled to convert. Early on, Nepal applied pressure, but a mistake from goalkeeper Geeta Rana nearly cost them, as Tohura Khatun's shot hit the bar. Amisha came close to scoring several times, including a powerful shot that also struck the woodwork.
In the second half, Bangladesh took the lead through Monica Chakma's goal from a pass by captain Sabina Khatun. Nepal quickly responded with Karki’s equalizer just four minutes later. The back-and-forth continued, but it was Ritu Porna Chakma’s brilliant goal in the 81st minute that ultimately secured Bangladesh's victory, silencing the over 15,000 Nepali fans present.
Despite relentless efforts to equalize, Nepal could not find the net, marking another missed opportunity to claim the SAFF title at home after previous finals in 2019 and 2022.
In individual awards, Bhutan received the Fair Play award, and Deki Lajom of Bhutan was named the top scorer with eight goals. Chakma was recognized as the best goalkeeper, while Ritu Porna Chakma earned the title of best player for her decisive performance in the final.
The ceremony featured notable attendees, including Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and various sports officials, who presented prizes to the winning team and players.
