Opponent Watch: Philippines Changes Head Coach Ahead Of Nepal Friendly

Germany’s Michael Weiss has returned for a second spell as the head coach of the Philippines national team, almost a decade after his previous stint in charge of the Azkals.
Weiss’ appointment was confirmed by the Philippine Football Federation on Tuesday and he will take charge of the Philippines’ friendly matches against Nepal and Chinese Taipei in Manila on June 15 and 19 respectively.
“We are delighted to welcome coach Weiss back to the Philippines Men’s National Team,” said PFF president Mariano Araneta. “He has kept the Philippines close to his heart and continues to be a well-respected figure by players and staff.
“He has also gained valuable experience over the past decade that will help him in his return to the Philippines. We are hopeful that his second opportunity to the team will be more successful than the first.”
Weiss previously led the Philippines from 2011 to 2013 and steered the nation to a third place finish at the AFC Challenge Cup in the Maldives in 2011. He won 21 of 44 matches in his first spell, losing 12 and drawing 11.
The 58-year-old has since worked in Mongolia and Laos and replaces interim coach Barae Jrondi, who was in charge when the Philippines played friendly matches against Kuwait and Jordan in March.
The Philippines have called up a 26-man squad for the friendlies, which will be captained by Birmingham City goalkeeper Neil Etheridge.
