Maldives stunned Syria 2-1 thanks to wonderful performance by star striker Ali Ashfaq in the on-going Nehru Cup match at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi, India on Monday.
Ali Ashfaq scored one and assist another for Ahmed Rasheed to stun Arabian side.
Maldives have six points from three matches and are still in the fray for the final entry.
Rasheed scored the match winning goal for Islanders in the stoppage time utilizing a cross off skipper Ali Ashfaq.
Earlier, Ali Ashfaq had put Maldives ahead in the match in 59th minute when he headed home capitalizing on a Umair Mohammed quick shot.
Syrian Alaa Al Shbli cut the deficit in 81st minute giving an impression to the spectators in the stadium that the match was going to end at 1-1.
But Maldives stunned Syria with the help of last minute goal.
Maldives coach Istavan Urbanyi was sent off for his unruly behavior (kicking a water bottle inside the pitch).
Earlier the match was delayed by 75 minutes due to torrential downpour in New Delhi.
