Bhutan advanced to the semifinals as they ousted Sri Lanka 6-0 in its opener of SAFF U-15 Championship 2017 at ANFA Complex, Satdobato, Kathmandu on Sunday.


Dorji Khando and Kelzang Jigmi scored brace each while Kinga Wangchuk and Siddharth Gurung scored apiece to ensure 6-0 victory for Junior Dragons.

Bhutan kicked off the match with strong performance in their first match of the competition. Bhutan played a beautiful game against Sri Lanka. No one had expected that level of performance from the Junior Dragons. They surprised everyone with their team chemistry and played like they have been playing together for years.

Bhutan dominated the match from the word go. They created constant threats to their opponent through out the match.

Khando opened the firing in the 9th minute in an assist of right back Karma Chetrim who supplied him a lovely through ball. He simply tapped in Karma Chetrim's cross in the 24th minute to double the lead.

Kinga Wangchuk struck a composed shot to the right bottom corner from a close range to extend the tally in the 31st minute.  Bhutan missed an opportunity in the 34th minute as Khando’s shot from the edge of box rattled the cross bar. Sri Lankan stopper Wijesooriya denied Jigmi in the 44th minute after capturing his low shot to the right.

Kelzang Jigmi slotted the ball to the left bottom corner from a close range after playing beautiful one-two pass with Khando in the 43rd minute.

Bhutan squandered two more chances before going few minutes half time as Sri Lankan goalie grabbed Kinga Wangchuk's shot in the 44th minute and Dorji's shot from edge of the D-box flew away.

Kelzang Jigmi scored his second goal in the 45+1 minutel to make the scoreline 5-0 in the half time.

Bhutan created many chances in the second half also but they could capitalize just one in the wee hours.

Khando was booked in the 52nd minute for taking the free-kick before referee’s whistle. Jigmi couldn’t increase Bhutan’s lead in 82nd minute as his close range shot flew over the cross bar.

Siddhartha headed home in the 90th minute in corner off Dorji to seal 6-0 scoreline in favour of Bhutan.

Sri Lanka crashed out from the tournament after losing both the group stage matches. Earlier, Sri Lanka lost 0-4 to Bangladesh.

Bangladesh has also booked place in semifinals after Sri Lanka’s journey in the competition ended.

Bhutan will play next against Bangladesh in the final group A match that decides the group leader and runners-up of the group.
