Manang Marsyangdi Club (MMC) are taking part in the Sheikh Kamal International Club Cup and are grouped against Chittagong Abhani Ltd, Mohammedan SC and Shaheen Asmayee FC.
They take on Chittagong Abhani Ltd of Bangladesh in their final group match and let’s look at what their opponents have to offer:
Chittagong Abhani Ltd as their name suggests are a club based on Chittagong and are the reigning champions of Sheikh Kamal International Club Cup and are also the runners up of the 2016 Bangladesh Premier League.
In the 2015 edition of the same tournament, Chittagong managed to book a place in the semifinals by securing second spot in their group with 2 wins and a loss which came against East Bengal. They then knocked De Spin Ghar Bazan FC of Afghanistan in the semis and avenged their group stage loss against East Bengal in the finals beating them 3-1 to clinch the title.
They were impressive in the BPL as well, finishing the league on second place, only 5 points behind leaders Dhaka Abahani and a massive 15 points ahead of their 3 rd place counterparts Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club. They had the tightest defense in the league with only 15 conceded in 22 games while also scoring 36 times, the second best in the league.
Newly appointed coach Saiful Bari Titu commented on his team’s chances saying they do have an easier group on paper but he could only judge the strength of other teams after every team has played at least once.
As the defending champs, the onus will be on Chittagong to produce during the tournament and having retained almost all of the players that guided them to second place on the standing in BPL, it will be interesting to see how MMC will match up with a top team from the SAFF region.
MMC will take on Chittagong on 24 th Feb, 2017, 7:15 pm. For more match details and live streaming info you can check back on goalnepal.com.
