England manager Fabio Capello caused a stir when he banned the WAGS from attending the World Cup - and after Spain's shock opening defeat against Switzerland yesterday he could have been forgiven for thinking his stance was justified.
While pundits gave credit to the Swiss defensive display and Spain's lack of penertration in the final third, many in Spain are blaming the defeat on the partner of Spanish goalkeeper and captain Iker Casillas, Sara Carbonero.
Casillas was partly to blame for Gelson Fernandes's winning goal in the 1-0 victory and fingers have been pointed at Carbonero, a journalist at a Spanish TV station, who prior to the game and in the warm up was filming footage to camera behind Casillas's goal.
She then asked the goalkeeper, "Well, how did you manage to mucK that up?" in her post-match interview.
Many Spanish fans have been angered by her presence in South Africa, fearing it could prove a distraction for the goalkeeper and prove a destabilising influence within the squad.
Carbonero, who spoke to Casillas in a post match interview, was asked by her own TV station, Telecinco, about her influence.
She replied: "Can I destabilise the team? I think it is nonsense."
The Spanish beg to differ. (From: Goal.com) |
